I had an absolute blast last November with NaNoWriMo. I was three months post-surgery, looking great, feeling better and I participated more with the local NaNoWriMo community. I didn't come close to my 50K word goal but I learned more and had more fun in 2010 than any previous NaNoWriMo. Earlier this year I decided (it was a New Year's Resolution) that I would try to hone my writing skills. Last Month I signed up for Writing.com. It is a user community dedicated to support aspiring writers as they develop their craft. So if you want to read my stuff, follow the link.

It's NaNoWriMo Time Again

Well I am going to participate once again in the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo)which begins Midnight November 1st and goes to Midnight December 1st. The goal is to write 50,000 words of a novel (or as many quickly point out novella)in 30 days. In 2007(untitled) and 2008(Brilliant Shadows) I wrote in the science fiction genre about a starship captain and his eclectic crew, including his android first mate whose body was cobbled together from parts of pleasure droid and a warbot. In 2009(Void Tripper) I wrote about a man who discovered that he could cross dimensional rifts into parallel worlds. It was a mixed bag of sci-fi and fantasy settings with a little horror thrown in. After all who can resist including the zombie apocalypse in their novel?

This year is going to be strictly fantasy. My working title is "Seven Sisters of Blood" and is loosely based on my gaming experiences in World of Warcraft although I won't be calling them "Blood Elves" and they won't live on Azeroth.

NaNoWriMo is a fun way to drive yourself crazy trying to meet a deadline. There are some rules to follow like you can't start writing before November 1st, and certain literary cliches must be avoided but other than that you can go crazy. By forcing yourself to write, stories take on different directions than you originally planned. Plots change and characters come and go throughout the 30 day exercise. If you complete the challenge you get nice little gifts and of course bragging rights. If you don't complete it, You still learn valuable lessons on what you have in you as a writer. And then there is always next year.

But don't fret! You are not alone! When you sin up at the official website, they give you all the tools needed to participate. You can register for a region and your geographical area might have a Municipal Liaison (ML) who moderates a forum specifically for your area. My group in Akron Ohio has weekly meetings at local spots so we can encourage each other in person. There is also a kick off party in the works this year. You can get all the support you need to make it through.

Now I am not trying to tell you that if you participate then on December 1st you will have the next Harry Potter Novel ready to publish and make you rich. Not gonna happen, but you will have a draft. Rough doesn't even come close to describing it. But in years past, one of the prizes for completing the challange was to have your draft printed in book form complete with cover. You say you want to finish and have a complete novel? Don't worry, the good people responsible for NaNoWriMo don't leave you hanging. The website has information on what to do after NaNoWriMo with your work if you want to see it through to being published by more traditional means.

So if you think you have a book in you why not take the plunge and be a 2010 NaNoWriMo participant.

I Have an Issue With One of The Commandments

Oh Not one of God's commandments but one of the 10 Commandments of Weight Loss Surgey. They are

You Shall Eat Adequate Protein
You Shall Drink 64 oz Every Day
You Shall Take Thy Vitamins Everyday
You Shall Eat Slowly, Very Slowly
You Shall Exercise
You Shall Not Drink With Thy Meals
You Shall Not Eat Sugar in Any Form, No Candy, No Ice Cream
You Shall Attend Support Group Meetings
You Shall Not Modify These Commandments to Suit Thyself
You Shall Love Thyself

Well first a little background. As of today I am 11 days post-op. I had a Bariactric Sleeve Gastrectomy. I feel great and no pain. Energy levels are good I just miss solid foods. I have to stay on a liquid diet for the first two weeks. Oh and I can't lift anything over ten pounds. Other than that I am peachy. Although the lack of pain has given me a little cause for concern.

You see the day of the surgery and two days after while I was in the hospital, they gave me morphine. And I needed it. By the time I was ready to go home I didn't need it. And the only pain I had once I got home I took care of with some acetaminophen. But they discharged me with a prescription for Lortab elixir, about a gallon of it. That's like liquid Vicodin for those without a PDR. So I wonder if I should be in pain and is there something wrong with me because I'm not. Oh well.

Anyway back to Commandment #7. I understand why I can't have sugar. Dumping syndrome is very unpleasant and is to be avoided. Also sugar is empty calories which defeat the whole purpose of the surgery. What I object to is in the subtext wheich reads

Treat yourself to some fresh fruit or better yet a walk or some new clothes.

Hmmm. Now I LOVE fruit. Some a piece of banana or pear or nectarine would indeed be a treat. But what moron thinks walking is a treat? Before you answer with the names of all your power walking friends consider the term treat and imagine this. Ladies your husband comes home and says "Honey, you've really work hard this week taking care of me and the kids and the home and all the other projects you do. I think tonight you should treat yourself. Why don't you take a hike!" See my point? That's just my perspective on it.

Oh and as far as new clothes, that's also a BAD idea. Am I really suppose to buy a $50 pair of pants every time I crave a 10 cent bite size York Peppermint Pattie? I think whoever wrote that was on their gallon of Lortab.

13 Fun Facts About Walking
In preparation for my bariatric surgery, I have to increase my level of activity. Specifically I have to do more walking as I will be doing a great deal of it immediately after the procedure. It helps removes the excess gas pumped into the abdomen during the procedure. So this week I have 13 facts about walking and the benefits of exercise. I may have modified a few.

Walking can add minutes to your life. This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at $7000 per month.
My grandpa started walking five miles a day when he was 60.. Now he's 97 years old and we don't know where the heck he is.
I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.
The only reason I would take up walking is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.
I have to walk early in the morning, before my brain figures out what I'm doing.
I joined a health club last year, spent about 400 bucks. Haven't lost a pound. Apparently you have to go there.
We all get heavier as we get older, because there's a lot more information in our heads. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
If you are going to try cross-country skiing, start with a small country.
I do have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them.
If you don't get enough of a workout everyday pulling your own weight or pushing your luck, just add about 1000 diddley squats.
I know I got a lot of exercise the last few years,...... just getting over the hill.
If the benefits of walking aren't readily apparent then look at my mail carrier. He's shaped like Jabba the Hut.
The advantage of exercising every day is so when you die, they'll say, 'Well, he looks good doesn't he.'

So get out there and walk!

I am still deep in NaNoWriMo so I grabbed 13 photos from the MyPhotos folder on my PC. Most of them are photoshopped creations I did. And Many have a foot theme. Hmmm maybe its time for therapy.

Jonny Depp and SpongeBob Squarepants together again for the first time. Somehow I don't think there is a woman out there who would reject John for having a SpongeBob tattoo.

I did this during the campaign. Too bad no one listened to me! LOL.

My little visual pun entitled "Obamanation"

This is an actual Dutch magazine cover. It proclaims "Black Jesus is Here!" No wonder the man has a Messianic Complex.

Here is my super friend Scott. I actually did two versions of the chop. This is the second. I added 15 pounds to him. Now he has a super gut.

Shamed by my super photo of him, Scott began an intense workout regimen. Unfortunately his regimen consisted of eating nothing but green chili burritos and beer. I did this photo to let him know what he could have been.

This is another super friend Dave. He once had a promising career as a foot model. It was cut short by a tragic ingrown toenail incident. As you can see Dave is currently suffering from burnout. But I have preserved some of Dave's finest work. Starting with today's Thursday Thirteen logo.

Dave's problems started when he wouldn't keep his feet off the table.

Dave's health began to fail and it affected the appearance of his prize winning feet.

Soon all he could land were cheap Sci-fi gigs.

But all was not lost. Two fellow foot models, Carpet Feet...

and Escalator Feet helped Dave land a new gig.

You cans see Dave's feet in a new exhibit honoring Magritte.

NaNoWriMo is kicking my butt this month so this week I have dusted off an old T13 I did some time back. Enjoy

Of course not! Why you look ravishing! No. Your big butt makes you look fat.

Times are really tough for all of us. And I am sure once he bounces back he will be in touch. You knew he was a deadbeat before he was your baby's daddy.

I'm sure he was drawn to your vast intellect and beauty. I'm sure he was drawn to your vast wealth.

The screen says the flight is delayed. I'm sure it will be here soon. The plane ain't landing but your Mom's broom just touched down at gate 47.

Well he's had some setbacks with his health and other issues. The lazy bum is deathly allergic to work.

No I have never had this kind of food before and let me just say the texture and smell makes for a unique dining experience. Oh man this tastes like crap.

I would describe her appearance as classical. I bet men surround her staring, transfixed by her look. The trick is not to stare directly at her face, instead use shiny surfaces.

Genetics is a powerful thing and he could very well inherit your brains. Since you're a dumbass chances are he'll be a dumbass too.

Let's hold off on the drinks until we get to the air conditioned room. You know how your mom sweats.

The Anticipation Is More Than I can Stand

Sunday is when NaNoWriMo starts and I can hardly wait. This year I have a new novel idea and I have been scribbling copious notes but I can't start writing until Sunday. I know a lot of Nanowrimos will start at Midnight but I have church Sunday and I don't do well unless I am fully rested. If I start writing in the wee hours I know I will pull an all nighter and be worthless in the morning. Not a good thing when driving a church van full of screaming kids. So I will start Sunday afternoon at the earliest but most likely after Sunday evening services. Then If I pull an all nighter I'll just fall asleep at my desk on Monday. But I have to go to work with some kind of word count (hopefully at least 1667) because the co-worker that occupies the seat next to mine is also in NaNoWriMo this year and if I have less of a word count than she does she will openly ridicule me.

13 Facebook Apps to Waste Your Precious Time On

As you may know, NaNoWriMo begins this Sunday. I usually have no problem on the weekends cranking out my word count. During the week is another matter. I get easily distracted by computer things. This year I have two new additions. World of Warcraft and Facebook. WoW will be easy enough to deal with. When my time expires, I just won't renew until after November 30th. Facebook on the other had has a bunch of free applications (apps) that usually require dailly maintenance. Here are 13 Facebook appa that are likely to waste my precious time.

Mafia Wars Do jobs to earn money and experience. Recruit Facebook Friends to be in your Mafia family. Fight other players.

Vampire Wars Do jobs to earn money and experience. Recruit Facebook Friends to be in your Vampire clan. Fight other players.

Space Wars Do jobs to earn money and experience. Recruit Facebook Friends to be in your Space fleet. Fight other players.

Dragon Wars Do jobs to earn money and experience. Recruit Facebook Friends to be in your Dragon Alliance. Fight other players.

Pirates! Do jobs to earn money and experience. Recruit Facebook Friends to be in your Pirate crew. Fight other players.

Battle Stations This spaceship building game is more graphically appealing than your standard app. But basically its the same premise as the others.

Farm Town Big Facebook hit. You plant crops. You wait. You harvest crops. You expand. Lots of fun.

Farmville Zynga the "wars" company created a knock off of Farm Town. Sufficiently different to try though.

Dungeons and Dragons Tiny Adventures Completely different but not necessarily in a good way. You make a character. You pick missions. Time elapses and your mission will consist of 6 to 18 die rolls. You pass or fail each roll. If you fail the last roll of the mission you fail the mission. You earn experience and cash to buy gear.

Cafe World My new best diversion. You run a cafe by cooking meals hiring waiters, serving dishes and expanding your building. Big fun! I NEED NEIGHBORS!

Superhero City Do missions to earn money and experience. Flash animation for the fights is a very nice bonus but otherwise same as the rest.

Castle Age Higher quality artwork, more variations on gear but same type of app.

Starfleet Commander This app is quite different from the others. It appeals to the classic 4X strategy gamer in me.

Now the main purpose of these apps is to make money. You can play for free forever but you can enhance your game play by exchanging real money for virtual money to buy virtual goodies and boons for your squad/clan/tribe/crew/family/team etc. And of course they make it almost imperative for you to sign up your Facebook friends as "teammates", a reciprocal arrangement which allows you to be a member of their "team" at the same time. So if you are on Facebook and play any of these apps, send a friend request to Dane Bramage (Akron Ohio) and tell me what game you are in and I will be your neighbor!

13 Reasons Why I Am Going to Have Bariatric Surgery

Five years ago I contemplated the idea of Bariatric surgery. Well more than contemplated it. I actually joined the program and saw the doctors and dietitians, the whole nine yards. What kept me from going through with it was insurance. My plan would not cover it. Well that has changed and I am in the program again. This time it looks very likely my insurance will cover it this time. In honor of that I am listing 13 reasons why I chose/need to have Bariatric surgery.

At the dinner table I sit next to everybody. Same thing at the theater.

My belt size is "Equator" I have to put it on with a boomerang.

My cereal bowl comes with a lifeguard. Sometimes I just eat from a satellite dish.

My driver's license picture says "continued on other side". And it is an aerial shot to boot!

When I jump into the air I get stuck. I can't even jump to a conclusion.

I caught a flesh-eating virus and the doctor gave me 10 years to live.

I have to iron my pants in the driveway

At the zoo, elephants throw me peanuts. Still not as bad as having Greenpeace try to roll me back into the ocean when I sunbath.

I have smaller fat men orbiting me.

Once I went missing and they used all four sides of the milk carton.

I have my own zip code. And my butt has its own congressman!

My belly button doesn't have lint, it has sweaters.

At restaurants I don't get a menu, I get an estimate.

13 Things about My NaNoWriMo Novel

November 1st begins NaNoWriMo. That's National Novel Writing Month. It is an annual excercize for budding writers to crank out 50,000 words in 30 days. This will be my 4th attempt and hopefully my second successful one. I am not allowed to start writing yet but I can have an outline and some notes prepared so I thought I would share 13 things about this years novel.

The genre is science ficiton/fantasy. While the hero starts on modern day Earth he travels to a myriad of different worlds and eras.

The Character's name might be Zach. Short for Zachariah. But the character I am using as my inspiration was actually Zephaniah so he could easily be Zeph. I haven't decided.

Zach has gifts. Special abilities far beyond normal mortals.

Zach is a Prime In a universe with infinite worlds and infinite variations, there are infinites numbers of you and me. There is only 1 Zach and 1 of each of the other primes.

Primes can pass through shunts. Shunts are invisible dimensional portals that come and go. Only Primes can see them or pass through them.

When Primes are not on the world of their birth, they do not age. So if they start adventuring young, a Prime can retain their youth indefinately. But they age normally on their world of birth.

All Primes instantly recognize other Primes as Primes. a "feeling" that is impossible to duplicate.

All Primes instantly know when they are on the world of their birth. Again a feeling.

Shunts never appear in the same place twice. But with practice a Prime can take a shunt to any world.

Primes can sense shunts. Some can sense when they will appear but not where. Others know where but not when. So communication is vital.

Primes have established a secret organization. They have a base in the form of a "members only" club on many worlds. A Prime doorman insures only Prime enter the premises. The goal is education and adventure reporting. Some think it should be more.

Physical laws vary from world to world Some places magic is very powerful while othere, magic barely exists

Zach wants to be a superhero With his new found abilities he can make his wish come true if he survives.

The basic idea came from a Champions campaign I ran where the heroes were Primes but there were only two worlds, Earth and Terra. Identical physically in everyway, the differences were often subtle and the heroes bounced back and forth between the two. I decided for NANoWriMo I would expand on the concept.

It is that time of year again and I am planning to participate in National Novel Writing Month or NaNoWriMo for short. I am under pressure this year to complete a novel (or novella for some of you purists) of at least 50,000 words. But I have to start it November 1st and complete it by midnight November 30th. The reason for the pressure is I completed the challenge last year so I am hopeful I can do it this year. The finished work needn't be ready for publishing and in most cases the end result requires numerous rewrites. But the object is to get the ideas out of your head and down on paper (or electronic media).

The biggest hurdles I will face this year will be depression over my economic situation, and World of Warcraft. To my credit I have gotten my toon in WoW to level 80 so as long as Cataclysm isn't released in Novemember I should be fine. Of course Blizzard could tempt me by releasing Starcraft II instead.

Last year my novel focused on a starship Captain, his android first mate and his strange collection of crew. Instead of furthering the adventures of my ensemble I have decided to change directions slightly. this year I have a new main character who has the ability to move through dimensions to different worlds. These worlds can be like modern day Earth or like Camelot or like Naboo. So it will be a blending of Sci-fi and fantasy backdrops.

I am hoping to get some support by encouraging my friends to participate this year. Wish me luck.

Superbowl Ads

Almost as important as the actual game are the commercials. Ad time for the Superbowl is astronomically expensive so those who do show their stuff come up with some pretty innovative stuff. Usually. The crop this year was pretty poor. I didn't watch the game, I was in church. So I didn't see the commercials when they aired. But there are websites that collect Superbowl ads. So I visited Hulu.com to watch this year's offerings. My favorite was Conan O'Brien's Bud Light commercial. Vrroom Vrroom Pah-tay Stah-tah.

I got a kick out of this Doritos commercial too.

I have mixed emotions about whether I am going to like the revisionist version of Star Trek. But the trailer looks interesting. Let's see if the film lives up to the hype. (BTW I HATED the series Enterprise with the sole exception of Scott Bakula as Archer)

Patrick McGoohan passed away January 13th. He was best known for his role as Number Six in the psycological/sci-fi spy drama "The Prisoner". The entire series consisted of only 17 episodes but is a cult classic. Before he passed away McGoohan had paved the way for a new updated Prisoner series. AMC and ITC shot the series and it is due to later this year.

Aside from the Prisoner, the American born Irish McGoohan did many many T.V. shows in front and behind the camera. He starred in four Columbo movies and was a good friend with Peter Falk. McGoohan also did movies like Silver Streak and Braveheart. He is known to have turned down the role of James Bond in Dr. No. MaGoohan's career spanned four decades.

McGoohan is survived by his wife, three daughters and five grandchildren.

In Memoriam: Ricardo Montalban

Ricardo Montalban passed away January 14th. He was 88 years old. Montalban's career spanned 6 decades of movies, theater, and television. Best known as Mr. Roarke on ABC's "Fantasy Island",

Every week on “Fantasy Island,” a fairy tale of wish fulfillment and exotic luxury that was shown on ABC from 1978 to 1984, a planeload of visitors with unachieved dreams flew in to a remote resort somewhere in the Pacific and were greeted by their dream facilitators, the sleek and suavely welcoming Mr. Roarke, played by Mr. Montalbán, and his assistant, an irrepressibly spirited dwarf named Tattoo, played by Hervé Villechaize.

I will always remember his big screen performance as Khan in Star Trek II:The Wrath of Khan.

Aside from his acting career, Montalban was also active helping to find meaningful roles for Latino actors.

Although Montalban expressed appreciation for his success, he complained that Hollywood lacked respect for Mexican American actors. He said that while under contract at MGM, he portrayed Cubans, Brazilians and Argentines, but almost never Mexicans.

"Mexican is not a nice-sounding word and Hollywood is at fault for this because we have been portrayed in this ungodly manner," he said. He challenged Hollywood to stop stereotyping Latin actors by casting them only as prostitutes, maids, gang-bangers and bandidos.

Through Nosotros -- "we" in Spanish -- Montalban attempted to highlight and recognize Latino participation in the arts and entertainment. In 1970, the foundation created the Golden Eagle Awards, which annually honors Latino stars, shows and movies.

Sources close to Montalban say he was a spiritual man. He is survived by two daughters, two sons, and six grandchildren.

Why Remake A Film

Okay I know there are dozens of movies that have been remade. And there are dozens of remakes of some films. My question today is why?

Sci-Fi flicks that are remakes today can take advantage of superior special effects technology like War of the Worlds and The Day the Earth Stood Still. But to really set them apart from the originals they make changes to the plot.

So what excuse does anyone have for remaking a none sci-fi movie? I ask this because it is said that Jackie Chan has been chosen to play Mr. Miyagi in a remake of The Karate Kid. I am sure a lot of people are saying "Wow! Cool! Jackie will be great!" And I ask why? Why remake a film that is undeniably a classic and spawned 3 sequels? What do the producers hope to add besides star power? Jayden Smith, son of Will and Jada, may get the part of Daniel so this version of the movie will not be lacking name recognition.

Remakes, like sequels have a mixed hit/miss history. Some remakes turn out better than the original, The Omega Man was better than The Last Man on Earth, you decide if I Am Legion was better than Omega Man. Some are worse like Rob Zombie's version of Halloween. Some are so different that they only share a name with the original film like 13 Ghosts.

Kids films are not exempt from the phenomenon. It seems in the last few years they have done remakes of many of old school favorites like Flubber and the Shaggy Dog(D.A.) In each case "updating" the story to make it more appealing to today's kids. And if you think that isn't necessary, try getting todays kids to sit through the originals.

So where does that leave us? I guess the quest for more money will always drive some producer or diredctor to remake an old film. Often the determination of whether it is "better" than the predecessor is in the eye of the beholder.

In Memoriam : Eartha Kitt

The world lost a very distinctive voice and an most unique personality Dec 25th. Veteran actress, singer, dancer Eartha Kitt died at 81.

Through the 1950s and '60s, she performed on stage and television, in films and nightclubs.

Her best-known TV performance was as Catwoman on the '60s series Batman. Her distinctive purr was later featured in the animated film The Emperor's New Groove and the Disney Channel series The Emperor's New School, for which she won Emmy Awards in 2007 and 2008.

The biggest controversy of her career occurred in 1968, when she spoke out against the Vietnam War at a White House luncheon hosted by first lady Lady Bird Johnson.

She was investigated by the FBI and the CIA and subsequently worked almost exclusively overseas. She later returned and, in 1978, was the toast of Broadway performing in Timbuktu.

Just before she died I had downloaded several of her songs including "I Want to Be Evil" I also have a copy of her version of "Santa Baby" which was certified gold last month. Earth Kitt had one child, a daughter Kitt Shapiro from her marriage to John Barry Ryan. Kitt said this of her mother:

"I had the most amazing mother. She was not afraid of dying. She was in pain, but funny right to the end. One of the last things she said when I was talking loudly to her - like you do to a sick person - was: 'I'm dying. I'm not losing my hearing!'
"And she said, 'There won't be a burial. I'll be cremated. I don't want to take up space.'
"My mother had no regrets. She said: 'I have lived an amazing life. I did everything I ever dreamed of.' I was truly, truly blessed to have landed in her lap."

Eartha Kitt had to rise above an early life of abuse and her story is inspiring. I hope that at some point she was able to come to the saving Grace and Knowledge of Jesus. Please pray for her daughter and two grandchildren.

In Memoriam: Majel Barrett Roddenberry

Majel Roddenberry passed away today. While every trekker knows of her work in ST:TOS, ST:TNG, ST:DS9, ST:V, she was also involved in getting other Roddenberry projects to television. And she was genuinely a nice lady. I had the privilege of meeting and talking to her in person a few years back when she was the guest of honor at the Gen Con Game Fair. She walked right up to us while we were siting in the atrium of the Hyatt and asked us about the game we were playing. We talked for several minutes before she moved on. Very friendly.

The story says she passed away from leukemia. Please pray for her family.

Well most of what I did was participate in our annual Vacation Bible School. We split the kids up into teams and each team was color coded. Here you see the team flags green, red, yellow, blue, orange and purple.

I think one of the favorite activities was eating. Here you see people lined up at the food stand.

The Spirit of Competition was thick in the air

If we could only bottle the energy the kids have!

But not everything took place in the hot summer sun

We had plenty of skits in the air conditioned Fellowship Hall

The last day we did something special and arranged for a "blow up amusement park"

We also used part of the property to set up a paintball range. A big hit with the teens.

The girls play "Super Volley Ball".

They worked together much better than the guys.

The Green Team teens relax and chow down.

While VBS was a day shorter this year, we still managed to do more, holding it all day instead of just in the late afternoon like previous years. It certainly drained me.
But we are already planning for next year!

If you've noticed the NaNoWriMo widget in the lower sidebar, I am more or less on track with the NAtional NOvel WRIting MOnth. In fact I will probably surpass the word count I stopped at last year by Friday. I am pumped and psyched and wanting to get through this. Some participants have already completed the 50,000 word challenge. I just hope that I can stay on task and finish this year.

By some strange quirk of fate, the co-worker I sit next to after our department moved to a new area is also doing NaNoWriMo only she finished hers last year where I fell short. This year we can encourage each other. I think support is making all the difference this year.

Micheal Crighton, author of Jurassic Park and Andromeda Strain has died at the age of 66. He past away Tuesday after losing his battle with cancer.

"Through his books, Michael Crichton served as an inspiration to students of all ages, challenged scientists in many fields, and illuminated the mysteries of the world in a way we could all understand," his family said in a statement.

I remember reading "The Andromedan Strain" and not being able to put it down. His imagination and writing inspired me and does to this day.

Watchmen Film in Limbo

I read "The Watchmen" graphic novel and thought what an incredible piece of comic art it was. Writing and drawing were superb! And I thought "Man, this would make an awesome film!"

Over twenty years later the dream has been realized and a complete Watchmen film is in the can awaiting release by Warner Brothers on March 6th, 2009. Or is it?

This is not the first attempt at making a Watchmen movie. Another film was planned by Fox back in 1991. They hired Larry Gordon to produce it but the project stalled. Gordon made a deal with Warner Brothers in 2006 but apparently Fox held the legal rights to the property and has moved to completely block the release of the film. Keep your fingers crossed and pray they get it resolved because the biggest losers in this will be moviegoers.

Most older people will probably remember him for his routine about the seven words you cant say on television. Sadly though today you could probably hear all seven in an hour of Spike TV programing.

George was far more liberal than I can really stand but you have to give him props for his contribution to comedy.

Much more than a "footnote in legal history," as Carlin often referred to himself for his role in the seven "filthy" words case, the comic was the first-ever host of Saturday Night Live, a four-time Grammy winner and a touchstone for generations of writers and performers.

Carlin was due to receive the 11th Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in November. The honor was announced just last week, around the time of his final performances, at the Orleans in Las Vegas. According to his website, he had dozens of shows booked through the end of the year.

In the 1990s and 2000s, Carlin returned to Hollywood as a revered elder statesman—a revered elder statesman with an always-young mind. He appeared in the Bill & Ted movies, earned two Daytime Emmy nominations for the children's show Shining Time Station and starred in a short-lived sitcom, The George Carlin Show. He found a kindred spirit in Kevin Smith, and vice versa, and appeared in three of the filmmaker's dialogue-driven comedies: Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Jersey Girl.

In Memoriam: Bo Diddley

'Musical legend Bo Diddley died last week at 79.
Somehow during my youth I missed Bo Diddley. I had heard of him and as I got into music later on I knew of his contributions to Rock, R&B, Jazz and Rap in terms of influences. But I never sat down and listened to Bo.

His survivors include his children, Evelyn Kelly, Ellas A. McDaniel, Tammi D. McDaniel and Terri Lynn McDaniel; a brother, the Rev. Kenneth Haynes; and 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Please pray for his family.

I am taking a breather today. My friend Scott emailed me 13 pictures to post for a Thursday 13. This was a no brainer. If you like it then it was my idea and I accept your kudos. If you hate it it's Scott fault and I'll forward your hate mail and be blameless! Anyway here are some pictures of work done by an artist who uses nature as a media. The life sized bear is made from pine needles and the sculptures are carved from antlers.

Scott's accomplishments include writing a newspaper column, authoring a book, and driving a truck from coast to coast. Unfortunately, counting is not among his accomplishments so rather than make this a Thursday 12, I am re-posting a shot of Scott's best side.

This pine cone guy could be the real deal or a hoax. The guy could be a great artist waiting to be discovered or somebody is yanking my chain. You decide. But the last paragraph in the email said, "I know the artist would love to hear from you. Just to know where his art is being seen around the world. He said he would reply to every email and print out every letter for his scrapbook. You can write him here at[email address removed]. His Name is Richard Carpenter." The Most Memorable Place I've Been

The most memorable place I've been (and not necessarily the nicest place) was New York City. I was road trippin with my brother and I had just got home from college so it was quite the adventure. We started by going to Atlanta to visit (and meet for the first time) some relatives. Then we drove east up to Trenton and eventually to New York.

I remember we went to see a movie and coming out of the theater a two o'clock in the morning. The streets were as busy if not busier than my hometown in the middle of the day. There was an energy you could feel along with a healthy dose of cautious trepidation. There has been no place to match it so far.

Well in case you haven't guessed I had to go to have a cat scan done this morning. This wasn't as bad as the MRI but I still consider it something to be avoided like the plague. They only needed pictures of my abdomen so I didn't have to squeeze everything through that little hole. Now I have to drink extra fluids to flush the contrast dye out of my system. As if the diuretics alone weren't causing me to rush to the can enough. Yeesh.

It will be officially Autumn soon and the signs are everywhere. This morning at 8:00 I left to take the kids to school and had to run the heater/defrost in my car. At 9:00 I left for work and had to run the air conditioner.

I guess another sign of late summer early fall are these beauties which I captured with my camera phone.

These Hibiscus Syriacus have volunteered themselves into my yard. The Rose of Sharon as it is also called blooms in late summer with these large flowers. The plant depicted in the first picture was murdered by my neighbor. For no reason whatsoever she pulled it and trashed it one morning. She didn't say anything about it. I just notice it laying in my driveway amongst the weedy debris of her garden as I was going to work. I seem to be surrounded by nutjobs.

When I started doing Thursday Thirteen I used some of the beautiful logos designed by other people that you can find at the Thursday 13 Hub. I still use a couple but I decided early on that I would prefer to use my own. Here are thirteen logos that I did and have used throughout my Thursday Thirteen Career.

The Church In The Barn I used a photo I took of my church for this logo. There is no 13 theme, just showing off the property.
Highway Thursday 13 I took a picture of some tabletop scenery constructed for miniatures games involving giant robot war machines, at Origins 2006. I altered it for T13.
13 Toes I found these normal feet on the web. I was looking for a pair that I could photochop into having 13 toes. This was one of the first photochopping exercises I did. If they're your feet I apologize.
Indianapolis 13 I took this picture from the window in my hotel room. I thought it looked cool and would make a nice logo.
13 Moves This chess game was on sale at the Origins 2006 Game Fair. Don't ask me how to play, I just thought it was an interesting shot.
Thursday 13 Services I created this logo at Church Sign Generator .COM They have a variety of denominations but I'm Baptist. You can go there and create a church sign with up to four lines of text. After you have it say whatever you want, you can save the image to your local machine.
13 Steps to Cardhalla This is a picture I took of Cardhalla. People build structures out of cards during the first three days of Gen Con. Then on Saturday night they hurl change at the buildings to destroy them. The change is gathered up and given to a charity selected at the start of the event.
Heritage 13 This car was painted up as a race car by our Bus Director at church for the Heritage 500 (our Vacation Bible School). I had to photochop some details out and add the big 13 on the side. You can see The Church in the Barn in the background.
13 Foods This is the food court at the Columbus Convention center. This is during a break in the gaming action at Origins 2006. I'm not sure why I used it, I might have been in a hurry.
13 Dirty Looks Here is a picture of my friend Dave. He is sitting next to a pile of dirty laundry. I photochopped the laundry out and in it's place I created Dave's evil twin. This was by far the hardest photochop job I did. The balding one is the real Dave.
Size 13 I know who these feet belong to. They're Dave's. I photochopped the rest of him out of the picture and turned them into shoes. I did not apologize to him. Coincidentally they really are size 13. I have always been fond of them.
13 Explosions I took this picture from my hotel room in Columbus during Red, White and Boom. I was very pleased with the pictures I took of the fireworks that night.
Super 13 The drawing was done by my friend Eric. It is close to twenty years old which is scary. Each character is was played by one of my friends in a game. We did this on Friday Nights for almost a decade. The cool dude with gun and shades was my character. His name was, ironically enough, Dane. Anyway I used this logo for my comic book list. Thanks Eric!

The Photo Church Tour Edition
Well I have been swamped at work lately and some of you may have noticed I was attempting to write the worlds crappiest novel. (Those of you who noticed, my thanks for not mentioning how very little I got done towards my goal of 50K words.) Anyway I thought since I was going to be late this week with my T13 I would try something simple. So here are 13 thumbnails of my church, Heritage Baptist Church. It has been called by some "The most unique church in Ohio". We call it "The church in the Barn". This past weekend we had a special day called "Old Fashioned Sunday". I took some pics. I also added some shots from our "Chili Supper and Bake-Off" a couple weeks ago. To see the full picture just click on the thumbnail.

We have our own school. This is the main schoolroom in the church lower level. We teach grades K through 12 and many of our graduates have gone on to college.

A while back, beth at And Then I woke Up had weekly poetry contests. I wrote this poem for beth's sonnet competition. It was inspired by Dave, the foot source for my photochopped Thursday Thirteen logo. One of his many cats had anointed his flip flops and I think he was the only one who couldn't smell it. So here is:

Ode to My Best Friend's Feet Which Stink

At long legs end majestically they wait
With digits each an eternity long,

Where I Was or What I Did to Their Summer Vacation Part Two

Okay I mentioned the prizes and showed you the pictures. Now a little more about the program. Every day for 4 days the kids had listened to two Bible messages. They were also given 1 hour to do crafts (younger kids) or watch skits and play games (teens). They then had one hour to eat and ride the go-karts and play video games. We rented a tent. I was big enough to hold half of our go-kart course, the concession stand, a platform with a pulpit and the bleachers.

Part of the course was set up outside in such a way that if needed we could run the karts just on the inside if it rained.

All the racing flags were donated.

The kids spent their time in the tent according to shifts. The 6 - 12 year olds stayed in the tent to hear their second message.

While we didn't get the number of teenagers we looking for, we did have more kids than we did last year. Growth is a good thing. My duties, aside from transportation responsibilities as a Bus Captain included skit acting. Thankfully there are no pictures of me as Wonton Fooey and I think they neglected to record my rendition of "All My Children" meets "West Side Story". Beyond that I was on crowd control and a teacher's helper. I was glad I wasn't designated a "Baptism Floater". I'm not sure how we were suppose to take that title but I kept envisioning some hapless church member face down in the baptistery.

And just so you don't think crowd control was easy, imagine Tuesday, over 200 kids ages 4-12, hopped up on nachos and orange drink. Two police cruisers from the Brimfield Police Department just outside the tent. It was nearly impossible but we got all the kids out and in a nice group to watch the officers turn on the lights and sirens. Then one officer said over his loud speaker: "Hey kids, come on over and look inside the car."

Rookies. It was like standing in front of a heard of gazelle being chased by a cheetah. I was literally peeling kids off the car windows. The fingerprints were so thick you couldn't see inside the cruiser. I yelled until I was hoarse, "Go to your classroom". The reply was the same from every kid: "I didn't get to see the guns!"

After the flood of micro humanity receded there were two cops standing next to the cruiser wondering how a thirty pound body pulled a side view mirror off the car. Rookies. The Brimfield Fire Department had the right idea the day before. Keep the kids a good distance from the engine and fire the water cannon at them.

Wednesday the Brimfield Rescue unit came and talked to the kids. I wondered if the Coroner was going to put in an appearance on Thursday, but that's just how my mind works.

After it was said and done we had over 130 decisions for Christ and had baptized 112 kids and teens (we baptized 55 on Tuesday which may be a church record for most baptisms in a day.) In the end that is what is important.

Where I Was or What I Did to Their Summer Vacation

Okay I told you real life got intense and here is where I spent a great deal of time, both in preparation and execution.

With school scarcely out, we decided to host the biggest Vacation Bible School in the area this week. We called it The Heritage 500, after our church, Heritage Baptist Church. We held classes and activities for four days from 3:00pm until 8:00pm (we the workers had to be there earlier and didn't get home afterwards until much later) Here are the busses from Monday bringing kids to our little country church in Magadore Village Ohio. Some of you are familiar with Northeast Ohio and will recognize the communities.

We reach Akron, Barberton, Kent, Revenna, and we have two busses that come from Canton. I am a Bus Captain (I drive a van since I lack a CDL) So I took two days of vacation to work 4 afternoons at VBS. Here's another shot of the busses.

We chose a racing theme and taught messages all week about being in God's race. We wanted to attract as many teenagers as we possibly could. So we offered a prize.

This prize ('95 Firebird with T tops) comes with Drivers Ed donated by one of our sponsors and will be given away Sunday night after our annual Teen Rally. Teens 13-18 years old are eligible to win. I would love to say that we had so many teens we didn't know what to do with them but the car did not turn out to be as great a draw as we hoped.

Speaking of sponsors, Valvoline was more than happy to lend us this guy. He stands taller than our fellowship hall.

Other sponsors include Pepsi and McDonalds.

So as not to forget the little kids, we had a race oriented prize for them too. A brand new Go-kart.

Kids 4-12 years old were eleigible. We held the drawing Thursday. One lucky kid will get his go-kart delivered Saturday.

We also had a prize for one of the adults who attended our Wednesday night service during VBS.

Again you would think that a free car would pack them in but the parents we were trying to reach stayed away in droves. One lucky woman took home the Villager after the service.

I have more pictures and more to tell you but I am very tired. So there will be a part two.

UPDATE Crud. It looks like the "folding" technology i once employed no longer works. I will have to find a fix for it.

Little Known Facts About Ohio

Well you may have wondered where I've been (or not.) I am going to tell you anyway otherwise I would have nothing to post. I spent the weekend in the Ohio State capitol of Columbus. I went down to meet some people I only know from the internet. We told that to everyone we encountered this weekend. You can just imagine the stares. But it's true. I frequent GOPUSA, a conservative political forum. Some of the people decided to have a meeting in Columbus. Since it is only a couple hours away I went. Conservatives are crazy.

We went to the Franklin Park Conservatory.

It's a great place if you are into flowers and winged vermin.

Inside the conservatory there were wondrous displays. Here we find an Amish farm. Note how tiny the Amish people are.

This was a problem for border patrol agents when the Amish immigrated to Ohio. Entire communities of Amish people were smuggled into the area in a single suitcase. Many thought their fanatical adherence to archaic technology was faith based. In actuallity it was size based. They couldn't find cars, phones, or electric stoves in their size.

This also explains why Amish like to stay away from "modern" communities in favor of their own. The first Amish settlement was in the backyard of Jerry Spencer next to his outdoor pool. The entire community was wiped out by a flood when Arlen "Fatty" Spencer did a cannonball off the high board. And now you know. Number 1

Your lack of memories is intensified by your self-doubt. But doubt about what? If only you could remember. There is one thing for sure. You know deep down that this whole situation is Number 2’s fault. You don’t like him. He’s hurt people you are sure. He’s hurt you. You also feel that at least one of the corpses was a friend. You like Number 8 a great deal. Could it be love? But you know that coming in the fate of the world rested in your actions. And you remember something about a Superhero Summit.

Number 2

You have no identification papers, no credit cards, no jewelry, nothing to give you a clue to your identity.

Despite your lack of memories, you feel very confident. You feel as though you are in charge. You are the leader on this job but you don’t remember the details. You feel that Number 3 is here to serve you and you can depend on him/it to watch your back. And then there is this nasty hatred of fire. You remember you hate fire perhaps because of something that happened before. You are leery of Number 1 and you hate Number 7 with a passion. But that is who you are. You do everything deliberately and with passion.

Number 3

You have no identification papers, no credit cards, no jewelry, nothing to give you a clue to your identity.

You are consumed with anxiety. Is that the correct feeling? You wonder if there are memories in your metal skull or are you just like your destroyed brothers strewn all over the cavern floor. There is nothing at all human in them. At the moment when these humans all lost everything, did you gain something? Are you now a sentient being where before, who knows? The source of your anxiety is rooted in something else. You feel like you are suffocating. You are claustrophobic. How? You feel that you must at all times help Number 2. You will always have his back. Is this loyalty or programming?

Number 4

You have no identification papers, no credit cards, no jewelry, nothing to give you a clue to your identity.

You look at number 5 and don’t like what you see. You look at Corpse Number 1 and like it even less. What is the connection? You feel you must keep an eye on number 5 at all times. But there is something else. You dislike number 8. There’s something about what she did to you. You know also that there is an important Summit happening soon.

Number 5

You have no identification papers, no credit cards, no jewelry, nothing to give you a clue to your identity.

You look at number 4 and don’t like what you see. You look at Corpse Number 1 and like it even less. What is the connection? Do you have some temporal fugue ability and these are copies of you? Does the death of Corpse Number 1 mean you are going to die soon? What if you are the “time clone”? You remember Number 4 gave all of you orders. You like number 8 and you really like Number 1.

Number 6

You have no identification papers, no credit cards, no jewelry, nothing to give you a clue to your identity.

You do have:
A Dart Gun
An odd pair of handcuffs that you must obviously throw at your target
An odd gun with a cylinder of gas attached. You don’t think it’s a weapon.

You are the man. You are obviously the smartest person here, and probably the smartest person anywhere. Your lack of personal memories has not diminished your mental capacity at all. In fact you find that not having the distraction of memories allows you to think much more clearly. You are already entertaining several theories on how to restore the memories using a psychotropic photon stimulator or aromatherapy. You know that no one appreciates your genius. Especially not the boss, whoever that is. You do feel strongly that you are responsible for Number 3. You have an intimate understanding of his functioning, based on what you observe in the wreckage of his “brothers”. And while you feel you have to follow Number 2’s orders, you don’t like it. He doesn’t respect you.

Number 7

You have no identification papers, no credit cards, no jewelry, nothing to give you a clue to your identity.

You care a great deal for Number 8. You are pretty sure she is your lady. You dislike Number 2 intensely. You fought before you are sure. You have an ace in the hole against him but you don’t remember what it is. You feel Number 3 is an abomination and should be disassembled.

Number 8

You have no identification papers, no credit cards, no jewelry, nothing to give you a clue to your identity.

You are sure that Number 2 is your guy. You have great feelings for him. At the same time you feel as though you have spent a great deal of time with Number 7. You are sure of one other thing there’s a big important meeting somewhere. It will be soon.

Security camera playback…

You are in combat. It is total chaos. You cannot determine what side anyone is on. Then Dr. Nihilist enters the chamber. 3 men and 2 women flank him.

“I am overwhelmed by the irony. I struggled so hard to infiltrate the Squadron
of Justice and after I succeeded, I learned that they had infiltrated my ranks
as well. I am surprised you made it this far. I am just hours away from
destroying all life on the North American continent. My rain of liquid light
will eradicate everything, showing the rest of the world they have no hope
against me, and wiping out most of the so-called superheroes at the same time. I
would love to chitchat further but alas I have more preparations to make.
However you can study the effects of liquid light first hand!”

The noise above the chamber draws everyone’s attention. Dr. Nihilist and his entourage leave as a single drop of intense light drops from the ceiling. When it hits the center of the chamber there is a massive explosion.
